The company was founded in December 2007 by James Diebel and Jacob Norda, with funding from Charles River Ventures and several private investors: Steve Blank, Sebastian Thrun and Magnus Sandberg.

The technology behind the company was developed as part of a Stanford University Artificial Intelligence research project.
